Kim Shefchik

Teacher

Idea: SISU - the rugged resilience of the UP and its people.

Bio: Kim Shefchik is originally from the metro-Detroit area. After graduation from NMU, she became a wildland firefighter and park ranger. Shefchik then transitioned her career with a second degree and became an Art teacher at Negaunee High School. She enjoys hiking, canoeing, camping, cooking, art-making, and spending time with her family, friends, and students.

Inspiration: As a yooper transplant, I continue a legacy of those who have come to the shores of Michigan's superior peninsula in search of a better life.

The UP has attracted people from all over the world. The Finnish immigrants brought much to the culture of the UP, one of which is the concept of Sisu. Sisu is a Finnish word that describes resilience, determination, and endurance against the odds. One of the reasons I was drawn to the UP was because of the spirit of sisu I saw in the people, culture, and landscape.

The trees, rock, and waters of the UP create the livelihood for those who have come here. Every component of the UP landscape is as enduring and resilient as those who call this place home.
