Forestry Management Plan

The City of Negaunee recently developed a forestry management plan on selected city-owned parcels. This action stems back to a city ordinance adopted in 2019, that established the legal framework to develop such a plan. Lots were chosen on their size, terrain, and current or possible future uses.

The forestry management plan covers a 10-year period and contains detailed information of the status of forest on each parcel, current property use, helps to identity when or if such forestry products are harvestable, and if not harvestable, other possible property use for the public good.

“At this time, the study indicates that our selected lots are not quite ready to be harvested, or others are not worth the effort. Our goal is not to clear cut or just take from our city owned forest, but to maintain them overtime, helping to keep them healthy and viable for future generations”, City Manager, Nate Heffron said.

The forestry management plan was assembled by Green Timber Forestry Consulting Inc. out of Pelkie, Michigan. “The Green Timber team was excellent to work with. They went onsite to each lot extensively and worked with city officials to understand their process and recommendations found in our plan, Heffron said.
