Safe Routes to School Project Update

Safe Routes to school project map 2026In 2020, the City of Negaunee and the Negaunee Public School District released a joint statement about a cooperative project with the Michigan State University School of Planning, Design and Construction. The goal was to develop a Safe Routes to School study.

Multiple public meetings were held to discuss the possible improvements to city pedestrian infrastructure and subsequent grant application. Students and families of the Negaunee Middle School, Lakeview Elementary, and Negaunee High School were involved in the study, with the goal of getting more students walking and biking to school safely, while increasing their health and physical activity.

This project is administered through the Michigan Department of Transportation. The contract has been awarded to Arrow Construction in the amount of $738,000. The project is expected to commence this week and is slated to be completed by mid-October 2026. Project plans are available at the Negaunee Planning and Zoning office for review. Streets to be affected are Division Street, E. Arch Street, W. Arch Street, the Brown Avenue/N. Baldwin Avenue intersection, Birch Street, Maas Street, and Baldwin Avenue north of US41.
