Old Town Abandoned Mines Fencing Update

Old Town fencing

The City of Negaunee is announcing an update in its efforts to secure unfenced locations in Old Town. Due to the increased prices for materials and labor, nearly all new fencing will be installed by city crews.

This decision was made after the city had received three bids that were exorbitantly higher than expected, resulting in all three bids being rejected by Council at their June regular meeting.

According to Heffron, nearly 3000 feet of new fencing will be installed in several locations where fence once stood or in locations in need of additional fencing. The missing fence can be contributed to removal by unknow persons or groups, natural deterioration, or relocation. It is hoped this project can be completed this year.

“Much will depend on weather and if other issues don’t popup throughout our community.  We believe we can get a decent amount of this done in the coming weeks and will be concentrating on the most concerning areas first”, Heffron said.

Heffron reiterates that Old Town is safe, but ask all individuals to stay on the approved trails, pathways, and parkways only.

Heffron reports that some RAMBA bike trials will be affected, but minimally. Both the Epic Trial and the Ranger Loop will see a rerouting of several hundred feet each.

In addition to the new fencing, Heffron reports that the city will take a more active role in the inspection process by developing a yearly inspection program of all fencing within Old Town.

“To be frank, I was surprised there wasn’t a policy or program in place already. The city wants to make sure it is doing what it is obligated to do under the law and most importantly, help protect both visitors and residents alike”, Heffron said.
