Negaunee Adopts Master Plan

The City of Negaunee is announcing the adoption of their 2023-2028 Master Plan. A master plan is a dynamic long-range planning document that provides a conceptual layout to guide future growth and development of a community.

Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (CUPPAD) and the city held several public meetings open to the public to gain insight and feedback to formulate the plan. A communitywide survey was also utilized, over 300 participants provide responses.

According to David Nelson the Planning and Zoning Administrator for the city, this new plan will be utilized to further the community’s goals and will be updated yearly as those goals are met.

Nelson encourages residents to review the plan and to continually provide feedback, as this document is a living document, updated annually.

“We even sought out information from the younger residents of Negaunee as well, by holding a few youth engagement opportunities”, City Manager Nate Heffron said.

The Master Plan not only marks an update for the future plans of the community, but also is the last step in becoming a certified Redevelopment Ready Community (RRC). According to the Michigan Economic Development Cooperation’s website, the RRC program is “a program developed with best practices, determined by experts in the public and private sector… designed to create a predictable and straightforward experience for investors, businesses and residents working within a community. These best practices challenge communities to be flexible while seeking quality development that supports a sense of place”.

“With this milestone reached, Negaunee is slated to become RRC certified later this fall. This status opens new doors to new opportunities for Negaunee. Once certified we will provide more information on these benefits”, Heffron said.
