Downtown Negaunee Celebrates Opening of Social District October 1, 2022

The City of Negaunee and its DDA are pleased to announce that they have received approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to create a Social District in Downtown Negaunee. The official opening of the District is slated for Saturday, October 1, 2022 starting at 5 pm.

The Social District designation permits participating licensed businesses to sell alcoholic beverages that can be consumed outside within the designated “Commons Area.”  Only liquor purchased from a licensed business in a specially marked cup is permitted to be brought into the Commons Area (no outside liquor is permitted to be brought into the area).

Customers should look for signs indicating participating businesses from which they can purchase beverages. Some simple reminders:

  1. Alcohol must be purchased from an approved business (you cannot bring your own alcohol to the district).
  2. All legally purchased alcohol in a designated cup can only be consumed within the Commons Area.
  3. Cups are one use only – please properly dispose of the cup after you have finished your beverage.
  4. All other laws pertaining alcohol under the State of Michigan apply.

According to City Manager, Nate Heffron, “Negaunee’s establishment of a Social District is meant to sustain and grow economic development by supporting local restaurants, microbreweries, bars, and similar food services by supplementing outdoor service space.”  Additional efforts by the DDA will be made to ensure that all cups are biodegradable to lessen any negative impacts on the environment.
