ADA Improvements in Negaunee
The City of Negaunee is working to make its facilities more ADA accessible. In recent years, the city has installed additional ADA parking spaces downtown, replaced the aged ramp entrance at City Hall, constructed a new ramp at the Teal Lake beach, installed barrier-free doors at both City Hall and the senior center, and installed ADA access points at LaCombe Field, among other upgrades.
Now the city is placing additional ADA features within Firefighters Square in downtown. These upgrades are designed for those who are hearing or visually impaired. Interpretive signs located in this park were translated to ADA voice descriptions after teaming up with Superior Alliance for Independent Living (SAIL) and the voice of Irontown Talk, Tony Stagliano.
According to Jamie Glen of SAIL, “The signs are not just read out loud. They are described. A sign may describe an object, picture, or other item — even something that cannot be touched. This method allows the listener to imagine what they cannot see.”
Stagliano provided the voice recordings for the interpretive signage, “I provided a script to be reviewed by SAIL. They helped clarify what should be said to describe certain items and their locations. This was a great opportunity to learn something new and be part of an important project to help others,” Stagliano said.
These recordings can be accessed by scanning a QR code on the interpretive signs with a cellphone or mobile device.
