PRESS RELEASE – RE: Public, Education, Governmental (PEG) channel

The City of Negaunee (the “City”) recently filed a complaint against Charter Communications (“Charter”) following their discontinuation of the Local Origination Channel (“LOC”) to Negaunee residents, and their refusal to provide Negaunee residents a Public, Education, Governmental (PEG) channel.  The LOC provided programming such as broadcasts of City Council meetings, public service announcements, and school related events.  The requested PEG channel would carry much of the same programming and more.  Currently, there are no channels carrying this type of information, nor does the City have the ability to provide “live” broadcasts of its Council meetings.

Representatives of the City and Charter recently met at the Michigan Public Service Commission in Lansing, MI to discuss a possible resolution to Negaunee’s complaint against Charter.  The parties agreed to work together toward a resolution, and to that end, Charter has requested the City provide an assessment as to community support and needs for a PEG channel.  The City is presently working to gather the requested information and data with the hope that Charter will recognize the importance of local broadcasting to the residents of the Negaunee, and ultimately agree to provide a PEG channel to its local customers.
