PRESS RELEASE – Construction of Jackson Mine Park Pavilion Project

The City of Negaunee is announcing that it will be moving forward with its planned Jackson Mine Park Pavilion Project. After the City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution accepting a $291K grant from the Michigan DNR Trust Fund. The project planning began with the Negaunee Parks and Recreation Committee establishing a pavilion sub-committee in 2012. The Sub-committee discussed the scope of the project and the design. After working out both of these components a grant application was submitted in 2017. “We found out in December 2017 we were on the list to be awarded a grant for the project in 2018, everyone at that point became very excited to get to work.” Parks and Recreation Supervisor Derek DuShane stated.

The project is slated to begin in the spring of 2019, with a total cost of $485,100, the city’s required match will be $194,100 which includes  force account labor/materials of $90,600, the other funding sources are Cliffs & Eagle Mine MQT Co Community Fund $70k ,  Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority $25k and the Negaunee Area Community Fund $8,500. The Parks and Recreation committee will continue working with the Pavilion sub-committee to raise additional funds which may be allocated for a new playground that meets ADA compliance at the site.

The location of the pavilion project will be in the Jackson Mine Park near the Iron Ore Heritage trial spur on Tobin Street. The pavilion structure 55’ by 30” in size will include a covered recreation area for picnicking and events, restrooms, and eventually a kitchen.  The project will also include onsite parking   erected off of Snow Street with landscaping, light features and a connecting spur to the Iron Ore Heritage trail.  “We hope that this pavilion will serve as a gathering place for community activities, festivals, family events, and educational activities” states City manager Nate Heffron.
