FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

2011 TAX  YEAR CALENDAR

Summer property taxes will be mailed out on June 30, 2011 and are payable beginning July 1, 2011.  Summer property taxes, as well as personal property are due by 4:00pm EST on September 14, 2011 without penalty fees. Beginning September 15, 2011 penalty fees will be calculated and compounded on a monthly basis.

Winter property taxes will be mailed out on November 30, 2011 and are payable beginning December 1, 2011.  Winter property taxes, as well as personal property are due by February 14, 2012 by 4:00pm EST without penalty fees.  All unpaid property taxes as of February 28, 2012 will be turned over the County as delinquent on March 1, 2012 for collections.
DATES OF IMPORTANCE
September 14, 2011

Last date for summer tax payments to be received in our office without penalty.  A postmark of September 14th is not sufficient to avoid a penalty if payment is received in our office after that date.

December 31, 2011

Last date for payments to be received in our office to have a 2011 posting date.

February 14, 2012

Last date for winter tax payments to be received in our office without penalty.  A postmark of February 14th is not sufficient to avoid a penalty if payment is received in our office after that date.

February 28, 2012 Final due date to pay taxes at City Hall.
March 1, 2012
All unpaid property taxes are turned over to Marquette County as delinquent for collections on this date.  Property taxes will no longer be collected at City Hall.  Only personal property will be collected.
 

Penalty Calculation
Penalty is calculated on TAX amount only. The 1% ADMINISTRATION FEE is not included in the penalty calculation.

End of Calendar Year Receipts

Payments must be received in our office by December 31st to receive a posting date within that same calendar year.

If you require a paid receipt, please submit a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please retain the bottom half of your statement for your records whether or not a receipt is needed.

 

-ATTENTION STATE OF MICHIGAN PROPERTY OWNERS-

Michigan Public Act 357 of 2004 changed the collection schedule for the County General Operating Property tax as follows:

  • One-third of the County operating property tax levy will be collected in July 2005 rather than in December 2005.
  • Two-thirds of the County operating property tax levy will be collected in July 2006 rather than in December 2006.
  • 100% of the County operating tax levy will be collected in July 2007 rather than in December 2007.
  • 100% of the County operating tax levy will be collected in July for each year after 2007.
 

Winter tax bills will be reduced by the same amount that is added to the summer taxes during that year.

All utility bills will be mailed on the 17th of the month with the due date being the 11th of the following month.  Payment must be received in City Hall by the end of business (4pm on the 11th) to avoid penalty fees and/or disconnect notices.

The following rates apply for deposits, payments and late penalties:

  • Residential Premises (Utilities) - Base Deposit $250.00
  • Commercial Premises (Utilities) - Varied (2 x last 12 months)
  • Multi-Meter Landlord (Utilities) - Deposit $750.00
  • Late Penalty on Utility Bills - $10.00
  • Returned Check Charge - $30.00
  • Accounts Receivable Interest - 15%
  • 48-hour Disconnect Notice (door hanger) - $30.00

*AS OF 08/01/2009 ALL ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS PAY A STATE MANDATED SURCHARGE ON THEIR MONTHLY BILLS THAT IS USED TO SUPPORT ENERGY OPTIMIZATION PROGRAMS IN MICHIGAN. THIS IS A CHARGE MANDATED BY THE STATE OF MICHIGAN. THE ENERGY OPTIMIZATION PROGRAM (PUBLIC ACT 295) IS INTENDED TO ENCOURAGE ENERGY CONSERVATION AND PROVIDE RESOURCES TO HELP CUSTOMERS USE ENERGY MORE EFFICIENTLY BY PROMOTING ENERGY OPTIMIZATION. QUESTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE CITY TREASURER AT 475-7700 (EXTENSION 16).

The following rates apply for water and wastewater services:

  • Wastewater: $5.73 per 1,000 gallons over 1,000 gallons
  • Connection to Sewer System - $50.00
  • Permit for Inspection - $50.00
  • Meter Installation (¾" or less) - $125.00
  • Meter Installation (over 1") - Actual cost (Min $125.00)
  • Water: $8.81 per 1,000 gallons over 1,000 gallons (metered)
  • Water: $8.81 per 1,000 gallons over 1,000 gallons (unmetered)
  • Reconnection Fee - $50.00 (Afterhours $100.00)
  • Thawing of Water Pipes (after 1st thaw) - 50% of actual cost and up to a maximum of $500.00 per year
  • Outside (lawn) water meters will be issued a credit for sewer fees on the December utility bill

Residents should have their garbage out by 7am on the day their garbage is to be picked up. Garbage must be placed at the curb or end of the driveway. Recyclables will be picked up if they are separated from the garbage and put out with the garbage on the designated day.

 

RECYCLABLES

Newsprint - Bundle and tie with twine or place in a paper grocery bag.


Corrugated Cardboard - Break down boxes flat, bundle and tie with twine. Cardboard should be clean and dry.


Clear Glass - Rinse clean, remove caps and rings. Labels can be left on. NO window glass, light bulbs, ceramic mugs, dishes or pyrex.


Plastic - CLEAR MILK CONTAINERS ONLY. Rinse clean, remove caps and rings. Labels can be left on.


Paper - Computer, office stationery, junk mail, and magazines. Bundle and tie with twine or place in paper/grocery bag. Do not mix with newsprint.


Metal Food Cans - Rinse clean. Labels can be left on. (Steel and tin cans are magnetic)


Aluminum - Pie tins, dinner plates, pots and pans, beverage cans, etc. rinse clean. (non-magnetic)

For larger items such as furniture and certain appliances, please use the refuse drop location at the end of E. Lincoln Street. This site will be open to garbage-paying residents on the second Thursday of each month from 12pm to 6pm.
